About the Vidya Subhashita Collection

Vidya means knowledge, and the Sanskrit tradition regards it as the highest form of wealth — one that cannot be stolen, divided or lost. The vidya subhashitas on this page celebrate learning, humility, diligent practice and the deep respect owed to teachers. A recurring theme is that true education softens the ego: "Vidya dadati vinayam" — knowledge gives humility — is among the most quoted lines in the language.

These verses are ideal for students, teachers and lifelong learners. They remind us that study is not only about marks but about character, and that the wealth of learning grows the more it is shared. Each shloka here includes Devanagari text, IAST transliteration and word-by-word translations in English, Hindi and Bengali, making even ancient verses easy for beginners to understand and recite.

Sanskrit tradition has always placed vidya, or knowledge, above every material possession, and these verses explain why: knowledge can never be stolen, divided or destroyed, and the more it is shared, the more it grows. One famous teaching says that among treasures, learning is the greatest, for a king can be deposed but an educated person keeps their wealth wherever they go. The vidya subhashitas are especially popular with students preparing for examinations, who use them in speeches, project work and morning assembly, and with parents who want children to value curiosity and effort over shortcuts.
