Sanskrit Patrachar (Correspondence) Course
Patrachar (पत्राचारः, "instruction through letters") is a correspondence method of learning Sanskrit. Instead of sitting in a classroom, you receive graded lessons, complete the exercises at your own pace, and post your homework back for personal correction. It is one of the oldest and most effective ways to study Sanskrit when you cannot attend regular classes.
How the Course Works
- Lessons by post or email — each lesson introduces new words, grammar and conversation in small, manageable steps.
- Written homework — every lesson ends with exercises: write the Devanagari letters, translate simple sentences, and answer questions.
- Personal correction — your work is checked and returned with corrections and explanations, so mistakes are caught early.
- Study at your own speed — students typically finish the beginner level in 3 to 6 months.
- Certificate on completion — those who complete the course receive a completion letter and are encouraged to continue to the advanced levels.
What You Will Learn
The beginner level covers the Devanagari alphabet, basic pronunciation, simple sentence building, common nouns and verbs, and everyday conversation. Students gradually progress to reading subhashitas — short Sanskrit verses like the ones collected in this archive — and simple passages from classical texts. Advanced levels introduce compounds (samasa), declension, conjugation and the reading of Niti-shataka and Bhagavad-gita verses.
Who Can Join
Anyone aged 10 or above can join, whether you know no Sanskrit at all or already read a little. Students, teachers, parents and working professionals all use Patrachar because it fits around their daily routine. You only need a pen, paper and the willingness to practise for fifteen minutes a day.
Why Learn Sanskrit
Sanskrit is the language of the Vedas, Upanishads, epics and a vast treasury of subhashitas. Learning it opens up these texts in their original form, deepens your understanding of Bengali, Hindi and other Indian languages, and trains the mind in precise, logical expression. Reading a subhashita in the original and understanding its grammar is a rewarding experience no translation can fully replace.
How to Enrol
Enrolment is simple: write to us through the contact page or email admin@subhashitam.in telling us your name, age and current level of Sanskrit (if any). We will send you the lesson details, the syllabus and the enrolment form. Fees are kept minimal so that the language remains accessible to everyone.
