स्नेहच्छेदेऽपि साधूनां गुणा नायान्ति विकृतिम्। भङ्गेऽपि हि मृणालानाम् अनुबध्नन्ति तन्तवः॥

snehacchede'pi sādhūnāṃ guṇā nāyānti vikṛtim | bhaṅge'pi hi mṛṇālānām anubadhnanti tantavaḥ ||

Even if the bond of affection is completely severed, the character and virtues of noble people do not become corrupted (they do not turn into enemies). Even when the lotus stem is broken, its fine, delicate threads still remain connected.

কোনো কারণে বন্ধুত্বের বা স্নেহের সম্পর্ক ছিন্ন হয়ে গেলেও, সজ্জন মানুষের স্বভাব বা গুণের কোনো বিকৃতি ঘটে না (তাঁরা কখনো শত্রুতা করেন না)। ঠিক যেমন পদ্মফুলের ডাঁটাটি ভেঙে দু-টুকরো হয়ে গেলেও, তার ভেতরের সূক্ষ্ম সুতোগুলো কিন্তু একে অপরের সাথে যুক্তই থাকে।

यदि स्नेह (मित्रता) का संबंध टूट भी जाए, तो भी सज्जन लोगों के गुणों में कोई बुराई (कड़वाहट) नहीं आती। बिल्कुल वैसे ही जैसे कमल की डंडी के टूट जाने पर भी, उसके अंदर के बारीक धागे आपस में जुड़े ही रहते हैं।

यदि केनचित् कारणेन महापुरुषाणां मैत्री नश्यति, तथापि तेषां मनसि भूतपूर्वमित्रस्य कृते कोऽपि द्वेषः शत्रुता वा न उत्पद्यते। यथा कमलस्य नालं छिद्यते चेदपि तस्य अन्तस्थाः सूक्ष्मतन्तवः परस्परं बद्धाः एव तिष्ठन्ति, तथैव।
